"Sustainable Chessboard: Chess Art with Eco-Friendly Materials" (Event Ended)

In celebration of International Museum Day 2023 (May 18), which embraced the theme "Museums, Sustainability, and Wellbeing", the Kinmen Cultural Park collaborated with the Forestry Office of Kinmen County and the Department of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture, National Kinmen University to launch this large-scale interactive installation.

About the Installation

  • The Forestry Office provided recycled cable reels that were transformed into chess pieces, skillfully painted by students from Kinmen University's urban planning and landscape department.
  • Each chess piece reflects local Kinmen elements, such as military camouflage, marine ecology, and landscape architecture, making the artwork visually engaging and rooted in Kinmen’s unique culture.
  • The chessboard highlights the sustainability theme, emphasizing eco-friendly materials and promoting community engagement through playful interaction.

Interactive Features

  • All the chess pieces are mounted on wheels, allowing visitors to move them easily and enjoy a game right on the plaza.
  • The installation is designed not just for display but for hands-on participation, inviting locals and tourists alike to experience the fun of sustainable chess.

Through this project, the museum demonstrates how art, sustainability, and local culture can merge to create positive community impact, aligning with the global museum theme of promoting well-being and sustainable development.
