The Kinmen Museum of History and Folklore opened on December 25, 2010, and on January 1, 2014, the "Kinmen County Cultural Park Management Office" was established to oversee its operations. Located along the Jinsha River on the eastern peninsula of Kinmen, the museum is beautifully set amid the scenic backdrop of Taiwu Mountain and Jingui Mountain. The Minnan-style architecture, nestled between hills and water, creates a picturesque environment, making the museum a key site for Kinmen’s cultural heritage, tourism, and education. Grounded in the study of Kinmen, the museum focuses on the region’s historical and cultural traditions, especially Minnan folklore, to preserve and promote local cultural values. Its mission encompasses collection, exhibition, education, and outreach, blending traditional culture with modern life to create an accessible museum for all. The museum also integrates resources such as ancestral shrines, villages, ecosystems, and industries to present a multi-faceted view of Kinmen’s unique island culture. It highlights Kinmen's cultural significance in Taiwan, cross-strait relations, and the international context, emphasizing its role in local revitalization and cultural equality. With the vision of becoming a "Cultural Gateway and Tourism Starting Point," the museum aims to shape Kinmen into a "Museum Island," promoting both cultural preservation and tourism development.
The primary target audience for promotion includes local residents of Kinmen, visiting tourists, and individuals interested in understanding, experiencing, learning, and preserving Minnan culture. Additionally, it aims to engage cultural and historical researchers who possess valuable resources and seek to preserve and archive them. The goal is to comprehensively safeguard the precious cultural heritage left by Kinmen's ancestors. Through the exhibition and interpretation of folk artifacts related to industries, life events such as weddings and funerals, historical sites, architecture, and crafts, the venue seeks to implement the preservation of history, cultural conservation, education, and the promotion of regional tourism. The facility will center around themes of daily life, culture, local history, and ecology, aiming to achieve the three core objectives of "culture," "education," and "tourism."
Focusing on the development and promotion of the Minnan cultural and creative industries, the space will be planned to support individuals engaged in cultural innovation and entrepreneurship. It will serve as a platform for exhibiting cultural and creative products and works, as well as a collaborative space for industry operations, research and development, and exchange activities.
The main focus is on the cultural and artistic education of Minnan culture. The spatial planning of the venue will prioritize education promotion and talent cultivation. At the same time, the needs of audiences and groups will be considered in planning the functional use of the space to facilitate future activities and performances.
